I grew up in Aruba, migrated to the Netherlands, and built a career across the Caribbean. At every step, I encountered the same tension. One the one hand, I saw governments working with legislation that no longer reflects today's realities. On the other hand, I spoke with communities whose knowledge and experiences rarely make it into the rooms where decisions are made. While my work centres the whole Caribbean region, the Kingdom of the Netherlands offers an interesting example. It is a relationship full of both tensions and opportunities. It is also one shaped by a power imbalance that continues to influence how policies are written, whose priorities are centred, and whose voices are heard. This is something I have come to understand not just professionally, but personally. Growing up, speaking Papiamento at school was discouraged. It was a language for home, not for the future. Yet today, I see Papiamento as a symbol of Caribbean resilience, a living heritage that has survived centuries of colonial pressure and continues to shape how our communities understand themselves and each other. Across the region, I am also witnessing a shift. Culture is actively shaping policy. Language, identity, and heritage are increasingly part of the conversation about governance, rights, and belonging and this cultural lens is becoming more and more central to my research. It is important, however, to emphasize that the Caribbean region continues to grapple with the legacies of the colonial era. Those legacies show up both in lived experience, and in the policies and frameworks that governments are still working with today. I am convinced that both sides of this tension matter. Working in Suriname taught me that communities, such as Indigenous Peoples and Maroons, facing the hardest challenges are rarely the problem. In fact, they are often the ones with the most knowledge. That realisation changed how I approach everything. I went on to study Social and Cultural Anthropology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where I turned that lesson into a methodology. I have built a research method that listens deeply and challenges systems that no longer serve the people they were built for. This work quickly found an international stage. My research with Venezuelan undocumented migrants in Aruba was presented at the conference Sharing Stories of Island Life and Global Engagement, and my work on how Papiamento/u language policy shapes power and belonging in the Dutch Caribbean was presented at the Modern Language Association Conference. Both brought together the same two questions that drive everything I do: what do the systems say, and what do the people experience? When the United Nations came calling, the vision was already clear. Today, Simon Global Consultancy works with governments and organisations across the Caribbean to bridge the gap between policy and people. Our work brought us to Aruba, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Curaçao, Guyana, Jamaica, Sint Maarten, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago. Ten countries. Hundreds of meaningful conversations. But what mattered more than the numbers were the relationships we built. Each project reinforced what we already knew. We are here to learn, amplify, and advocate alongside communities. By working with them, we help make knowledge visible to those who need to hear it. This is ultimately how Simon Global Consultancy works.
